How California sales tax works
Every taxable purchase in California starts with the 7.25% state rate. On top of that, the city, county, and any special districts where the sale happens add their own rates. Averaged across where people actually shop, locals pay about 9.03% all-in.
To figure the tax yourself: multiply the price by 0.0903. A $250.00 purchase generates $22.58 in tax for a total of $272.58. To back the tax out of a receipt total, divide by 1.0903 instead. The calculator above does both.
Methodology, sources, and limitations
Estimated sales tax equals the purchase price multiplied by the rate entered. The preset combines the 7.25% state rate and the 1.78% population-weighted average local rate, for an average of 9.03%. Reverse mode divides a tax-inclusive total by 1.0903when the preset rate is unchanged.
We checked the state rate and current guidance against the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration. The average local rate comes from the Tax Foundation midyear 2026 dataset, using rates as of July 1, 2026.
California district taxes vary by location, and the taxable amount can depend on the product, service, delivery, and exemption rules. This calculator estimates tax from the rate you enter; it does not decide whether a specific transaction is taxable.
